Several days ago we listed the Greens’ Performing Arts policy, today we have the ALP’s Arts Policy “Investing In A Creative Australia”. We look forward to being able to compare policies if the Coalition releases one before the election.
Labor’s Arts Policy includes:
- Moving funding programs from the Minister’s Department (DEWHA) to the arms-length funding body, The Australia Council
- $10 million for the Australia Council to invest in up to 150 new artistic works, presentations and fellowships.
- Commitments to complete the National Cultural Policy and Strategic Contemporary Music Industry Plan
- Negotiate a new model for supporting Major Performing Arts Organisations “which rewards success, provides greater access for Australian audiences, promotes enhanced artistic excellence, and ensures prudent levels of accountability from major performing arts organisations”
How does it affect us?
Implications for youth music (in their own words):
What they will do:
- Develop a national cultural policy.
- Negotiate with the States to develop a new major performing arts funding model which rewards success, provides greater access for Australian audiences, promotes enhanced artistic excellence, and ensures prudent levels of accountability from major performing arts organisations.
- Finalise a Strategic Contemporary Music Industry Plan.
What they have done:
- Established the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) to develop a rigorous and world-class Australian Curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 12, with arts to form part of the second phase of national curriculum along with geography and languages.
- Developed a whole-of-government National Indigenous Languages Policy to help preserve Australia’s Indigenous languages, many of which are critically endangered. (nb. this policy specifically refers to the Indigenous Contemporary Action Plan and other music-related initiatives).
- Funded new programs under the Australia Council, including: the Creative Communities Partnerships Initiative, Artist in Residence (AIR) program, Opportunities for Young and Emerging Artists and ArtStart.
