The International Year of Youth – Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.
August 12, 2010 – August 11, 2011
Today is International Youth Day, and marks the beginning of the International Year of Youth. The Australian Youth Music Council looks forward to a year of productive dialogue within the music sector and with other youth organisations during the Year of Youth. It is important for young people to have their say, and it is encouraging that the United Nations has endorsed and highlighted youth participation.
Here is some of what the UN has announced:
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations is delighted to announce that the UN General Assembly has proclaimed the year commencing on 12 August 2010 as the International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. As the 12 of August is the International Day of Youth, the launch of the 2010 International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding will be on this specific day and will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the 1985 International Year of Youth: Participation, Development and Peace - a year that brought a lot of global attention to youth participation and mainstreamed the voice of young people all around the world.
The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society. We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society.
The United Nations has released a framework approach for the Year of Youth. Click here to read it.
The United Nations Youth Association of Australia is active in this country as an advocate for young people and is based firmly on a philosophy of best practice youth-for-youth leadership.
